Media and information literacy
Media and information literacy encompasses the skills required to access, analyse, evaluate, and create media and information in various forms. It teaches individuals to critically assess the content they consume and produce, understanding its purpose, message, and impact, thereby fostering informed and responsible engagement with media and information sources.
Why we have this course and how it is going to help students in future
We have selected the Media and Information Literacy course for twelfth-grade students for several compelling reasons:
- In today’s digital age, students are constantly bombarded with a vast array of information and media. This course helps them discern credible sources, understand media messages, and appreciate the ethical standards of information dissemination.
- The curriculum includes practical skills such as evaluating the reliability of online sources, understanding biases in media, and the safe and ethical use of social media. For example, students might analyse different news articles to identify bias and compare how various sources report on the same event.
- By developing critical thinking and analytical skills, students will be better prepared to navigate the complexities of the information they encounter daily, making informed decisions and participating actively in democratic processes.
- The knowledge gained in this course is invaluable for future academic pursuits and careers, where media and information literacy is increasingly crucial across all fields.
- Ultimately, this course empowers students to be more thoughtful, informed, and responsible consumers and creators of information and media, essential for their personal, academic, and professional success.
