Everyday Etiquette & Social Grace

Manners and etiquette

Manners and etiquette refer to the set of rules and conventions that govern socially acceptable behaviour. They help guide interactions by promoting politeness, respect, and consideration for others in various social and professional situations, enhancing communication and relationships.

Why we have this course and how it is going to help students in future

We selected the manners and etiquette course for fifth-grade students because this stage of development is pivotal for shaping their interpersonal skills and social behaviours. As children approach adolescence, imparting knowledge on proper conduct, courtesy, and communication becomes essential. This course teaches them the importance of polite expressions like "please" and "thank you," the value of listening to others, and the etiquette of sharing and taking turns. These basic principles foster a sense of respect and empathy, which are crucial as they begin to encounter more diverse social situations both in and out of school.

For instance, understanding how to maintain polite conversation, showing respect when others are speaking, and knowing the appropriate way to act at a public gathering or during meals not only enhances their personal interactions but also prepares them for future academic and professional environments. By mastering these skills early on, students are better equipped to handle social interactions smoothly, contributing to their overall social success and building a foundation for responsible and considerate behaviour in their future endeavours.
