Everyday Legal Literacy

Legal Literacy

Legal literacy refers to the ability to understand and make use of the law effectively. It involves knowing your rights and responsibilities, the legal implications of actions, and how to navigate legal systems. This knowledge empowers individuals to protect themselves legally and participate actively in societal governance.

Why we have this course and how it is going to help students in future

We've chosen to introduce the Legal Literacy course for 9th grade students because:

  • At this age, students are starting to engage more deeply with the world around them. Teaching them about legal literacy helps them understand societal rules and their implications. For example, they will learn the legal consequences of actions like downloading music illegally or what constitutes plagiarism.
  • This course will equip students with the knowledge to recognize and uphold their rights and responsibilities, ensuring they grow into informed citizens. By understanding basic laws, such as those related to cyberbullying, they can better navigate challenges in their daily lives and online interactions.
  • Early education in legal literacy lays a foundation for responsible behaviour and critical thinking. It prepares students for future scenarios where legal knowledge is advantageous, such as understanding employment rights or tenant laws when they start their first jobs or move to new homes.
  • Ultimately, this course empowers students by fostering a sense of justice and duty, encouraging them to participate actively and responsibly in their communities.
